Hotel Design

Our Narragansett hotel’s interior design is a key part of our “vintage beach community” brand. While our furnishings and features embrace Narragansett’s seaside vibe, they also tap into the surfer nostalgia of the late 60’s — when local surfing legend, Peter Pan, burst onto the scene and put Narragansett on the map. Mid-century flare blends with bold, modern textiles to create a Narragansett hotel that is fun and hip, but also warm and welcoming.

Crafting this look with owners, Jim and Becky Durkin (also of Durkin Cottage Realty), were architect Frank Karpowicz of Frank Karpowicz Architects Interior designer Jocelyn Chiappone of Digs Design Company provided the vision to bridge the classic and the modern, the vintage and the eclectic, the elegant and the savvy. Bob Poulin of RAP Builders and his team were the “boots on the ground” making the plans a reality. When it came to the decor, we focused on using as many talented local artisans as possible including:

  • Chris WyllieA native of Pawtucket, RI, this talented artist is responsible for bringing to life our 1970’s painting of local surfing legend, Peter Pan. His work is in the permanent collections of The Whitney Museum of American Art, The Fisher-Landau Center for Art, Gibson Guitar, The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and many private collections.
  • Susan O’Donnell Elegant hand printed Gyotaku fish rubbings can be seen throughout the hotel. Each one printed from real fish onto canvas or linen and framed!
  • Tracy Glover StudioA graduate of RISD, Tracy used traditional Italian techniques to craft exuberant, statement-making glassworks for Chair 5.
  • Magma Design GroupLandscape architects that brought their creative, collaborative and environmentally conscious vision to our pool area.
  • Living Stone ConcreteLocal concrete artisans they brought our bar to life by using the creative attributes of concrete to create the heated concrete countertop bar in our main dining room at Chair 5.

We think the team succeeded magnificently here at The Break!

Stayed for three days and wished we could stay longer! Quiet, immaculate, beautiful upstairs deck/bar and Chair 5 was one of the best meals I have had in my life! The rooms were beachy modern and clean. Highly recommend and can't wait to come back!

Very pleasant, attentive staff who went out of their way to delight us. Rooms are modern, very well equipped including a gas fireplace. Ours had a nice balcony with great views of the sunrise. Bar areas are well appointed and the drinks are generous.

Loved everything about this hotel. My husband and I snuck away on the off season for a little getaway and it was just perfect!

The hotel is beautiful including the design, the colors, the furniture, the bars, the restaurant, the pictures, the fireplaces, the lobby, and the very comfortable suites with a balcony facing the ocean a block way.

The entire staff was friendly, warm, and caring. We wouldn't hesitate to stay here again. As a matter of fact, I wouldn't mind staying here and driving the 16 miles to Newport. It's THAT Good!

I cannot say enough about this hidden gem! It was the perfect escape! The owners have seriously thought of everything...EVERYTHING. The lobby, rooms, and restaurants are stylishly decorated - think New York chic blended with a comfortable beach house.

We stayed for the weekend for our anniversary. It was wonderful! The room was like being in your own beach cottage.....fire place, balcony, rain shower. The extras were top notch - Kuerig in the room, spa quality toiletries, cookies at night, Lindt truffles on the pillow.

This hotel is sublime! Every corner is beautiful. We stayed here for our wedding night and came back for our one-year anniversary. Elegant, luxurious, beautiful, romantic...you do not need to even leave! So much to do! I highly recommend this as a getaway for everyone! Worth every penny! Perfection!

What a gem! Every part of this hotel has been thought through with an attention to detail rarely seen in these parts. From the Usb outlets underneath the bar to the heated floors in the bathroom and the option for an in-room iPad for use during your stay (and Apple TV).

Needing a place to visit and catch up with friends from NYC, picked The Break figuring that RI was a decent 1/2 point. What a great decision! This has got to be one of the best finds. A boutique hotel, with gorgeous (and I mean 'gawgeous!!) water views from the 4th floor bar and lounge.
